OK so to anyone who has not yet seen the new show on ABC “V”, I would like to provide you a link to HULU where you can watch it with very limited commecial interruption. Click here
If you do not trust my link I believe Fancast.com (run by comcast) may have it too but with more interruptions. HULU is a secure site for watching your favorite TV episodes after they have run. On to the comparisons:
I have always enjoyed Science Fiction; Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Independance Day, and I even got into Star Trek for about a year. So when ABC began running the ads for this show I became excited. Thursday night NBC programming is really the only night of programming that I look forward to, so the idea that another night of interesting programming might be coming lured me to watch the pilot of V. It started like many other shows and Sci-Fi flicks giving you a breif introduction to your future main characters with a short glimpse of their life before the Visitors appear. The ships appear and confusion reigns, but then the broadcast begins to clear up the confusion immediately. They are here in peace and are pleased to find that another intelligent race exists. I thought that the clapping and immediate general acceptance was a little overdone, but I am not a producer so whatever.
What follows quickly got me drawing parallels to our current administration in the United States: The indoctrination of our children by means of appeal, community organizations to spread the good word, offering universal health care to all, selection and regulation of media, global government, and using terms like “to give hope to the people” and “change for the sake of the people”. This show quickly made me a huge fan as I took it as a direct comparison to our current situation.
Indoctrination of children is possibly a very fine line because what President Obama actually said to school children versus what was initially planned (what can you do to help the president work sheets) is very different. No one can doubt the role that community organizations have taken in present society. Not only was our president an organizer himself, but there was a monumental movement made by several community organizations not just in the presidential race but also in the Democratic Primary where President Obama was trailing Sec. Clinton for most of the period before the polls opened.
The statement about Universal Health Care for all is what made me stand out of my chair. Surely that did not just happen? Not on ABC! Well I guess it wasn’t NBC so ok I’ll let it slide. The basic fundamentals of Communism are founded by providing free health care and education to all. This creates a crutch or a false trust/dependency on your leaders. Who can argue against free health care? If you oppose the idea then you portrayed as opposing saving the lives of the poor under-deserved. But I am not writing to compare and contrast the opposing sides of Private or Government run health care because there are horror stories on both sides and to be honest that would make this blog a little too lengthy.
The next parallel is seen in the selection and regulation of media. The leader of the Visitors selects a young aspiring video journalist to be the single reporting voice of the Visitors to the rest of the world. Of course he is initially flattered, but becomes concerned when he is asked not to ask questions that paint the Visitors in a negative light. This is yet another basic fundamental to bringing upon Communism. There have been several advisors in the current administration that agree with this idea (i.e. Mark Lloyd, FCC Regulation Advisor, on Hugo Chavez in Venezuela). We have recently seen this with the current administration attacking Fox News asking them to not be treated as a real news network and refusing to grant them interviews. Most of Fox News’ programming is strict video journalism, in which the news is shown and discussed by the anchors in a objective and unbiased fashion. Because of this, all of the other major news networks agreed against the White House because it would inevitably effect the future of their own existence. Imagine if the media was not able to report against the many fallacies of former president George Bush! Obviously the White House does not like the conservative pundits (O’reilly, Limbaugh and Beck). But as long as we have the two party system where people are fundamentally and morally different, conservative and liberal pundits will exist.
The next item on the list which is Global Government has just entered the fray. The global climate change bill that President Obama will sign with many other world leaders will create the first global governing body that will be able to take precedence over any national government that is a part of it. Now, grant it, we are only talking about extra taxes for extra emissions but the simple matter of it is that we will be signing away some of our freedoms to a governing body that will not have our needs at the forefront of our minds. There are several that argue that this bill would just be the beginning of a larger global government body. Let me set the record straight before you get upset with me. I am all for being more responsible as an individual and a country when it comes to the environment. I am ok with President Obama mandating emission restrictions on future automobiles because not only is it in the best interest of the environment, it is also in the best interests of the United States edging us closer away from foreign oil dependence. But to hand over the regulations to a governing body that will tax us for not being as green as a country that doesn’t have 1% as much manufacturing as us and then spreading that money to the less developed countries? Say it ain’t so!
Back to the show. If there was any doubt to the parallels from the show to our current administration, then here are the kickers. In two key lines of dialogue they use the words “hope” and “change”. These were the two key words/ideas that President Obama built his campaign around.
To get back to the Sci-Fi aspect, the end of the episode reveals to us that the Visitors are actually here to exterminate us for our natural resources. But there are some Visitors that sympathize with us and want to help us beat the invaders.
All in all I am very interested and I will be looking forward to how the plot line (and undertones) develop. Add it to your list of shows to watch Tuesdays at 8/7central. Or just DVR it!
